Industry Certifications

An industry certification or state licensure is a document verified by a recognized industry, trade, professional association, or state agency that recognizes student attainment of established standard levels of achievement. Certifications are earned by the successful completion of a standardized exam that is graded independently of the school, and is knowledge-based and represents preparation for an occupation. These exams are administered on a multi-state or international basis, and are either on the Virginia Board of Education approved certification list or approved by the Virginia Community College System. For information about certifications approved by the Virginia Board of Education for secondary students, go to:

For more information about certifications offered through this program at Virginia community colleges, go to:

Industry certifications are a valuable credential for students entering the workforce because they provide validation beyond school standards of a student’s skills in the workplace. They also provide greater earning potential for the student and often lead to increased job opportunities. Many of the classes that lead to these certifications cost thousands of dollars in the private sector but are provided free to Chesterfield students.
