Career and Technical Education_______________________________________________________How Does Career and Technical EducationFit with College?Currently 8,500 students take Career and Technical Education classes in 11 Chesterfield County High Schools. Approximately 67% of students attending the Chesterfield Technical Center plan to pursue post-secondary education for advanced degrees. Every year the Chesterfield Technical Center has students taking its courses who are accepted at selective colleges such as the University of Virginia, William and Mary College and Georgetown University. Why are they doing this?CTE Provides Training for Hot Careers: A former James River student took every CTE Technology course possible while attending high school. Many of these courses led to internships that provided practical work experiences in the technology industry. He followed up these experiences by earning a degree in Information Technology from Virginia Tech and today works for Microsoft at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. He regularly contacts his former teachers and tells them how his high school CTE classes helped prepare him for his career. Accepted at the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond, she received a partial scholarship to attend UR. She worked part-time as a cosmetologist to supplement her expenses while in college. A Business major, her dream is to one day own her own chain of beauty salons. Upon college graduation, she accepted a job in Human Resources with the E.I. Dupont Corporation. While she still is still interested in cosmetology, she is excited about the opportunity for working for one of the major corporations in the Untied States. Perhaps, one day she might combine the knowledge learned from the corporate world with her love of cosmetology to run her own chain of beauty salons? CTE Provides Experiences that Supplement College Education: A Clover Hill student used his training in CTC’s Legal Systems Administration class to obtain an internship with a local law firm. The internship helped provide part time income for this student while he attended high school and fostered his interest in the legal profession.
