Why Does CTE Make Sense

For the 21st Century?

For students, all of whom will work in the 21st Century, Career and Technical Education offers several advantages. It provides:

1. Free Technical and Career Training:
CTE courses offer training and industry certifications for some of the most sought-after jobs needed in today’s economy. Classes in Cisco and Oracle Certification can cost up to $12,000 in the private sector-they are offered free to Chesterfield students.

2. Earn Dual Enrollment College Credits:
Many CTE courses offer dual enrollment college credit. These go toward a degree in Virginia’s community college system or transfer to a Virginia state supported four-year college. Former Governor Mark Warner estimates that a student can save as much as $5,000 in college tuition by taking dual enrollment courses in high school.

3. Skills for Supplemental Employment to Help Pay for College:
Students training for the 21st Century often do not finish their education until the age of 30. This often strains family savings set aside for college and requires students to work part time to supplement their education. CTE courses provide skills that help students obtain part time employment that earns more than minimum wages.

4. A Backup Plan to Misguided Dream Careers:
Students’ first choice of careers often do not develop as planned. The economy changes or employment opportunities decline. Sometimes technology eliminates careers or the jobs are outsourced. Currently 30% to 40% of community college students already have a four-year college degree. CTE courses provide training in jobs that can support students while they read just their career goals and receive additional training.

5. Real Work Experience in the Area of Interest:
Business wants employees who have a solid academic background. They also want employees who know how to transfer their knowledge into practical real-world solutions. Students who have practical real world experience have an advantage over those with just classroom experience. CTE courses provide real world experiences that supplement classroom content.
